Tactual Scenes
Synesthesia or synaesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.People who report a lifelong history of such experiences are known as synesthetes. However, not only synesthetes have such synesthesia, ordinary people often have synesthesia as well, with various degrees of distinction. I try to discover my synesthesia for certain things and use its characteristics to express it. These sensations originate from my upbringing, life, and dreams, and they can be triggered by certain media such as sight, sound, taste, and tactual sense.
The photographs explore the correlation between materials and images through the expression of touch in synesthesia. Presented with my growth experience as the clues, the artworks are divided by the photographic media used at each stage, as a way to retrace my memory. Taking the photos is also a process of rediscovering and understanding oneself, which tries to recreate the answer of “who I am” through these scenes and materials.
